Abstract

Strengthening the culture of Intellectual Property (IP) in public universities is essential for transforming scientific knowledge into innovation and socioeconomic development. This study assesses the maturity level of the IP culture at the Federal University of Alfenas (UNIFAL-MG), based on an institutional survey approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP), applied to faculty members and students. The results reveal significant structural advances, such as the consolidation of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Agency – I9, but also highlight weaknesses in the dissemination of the IP culture. It was found that 53.2% of respondents are unaware of the office responsible for IP management, and only 29.7% reported knowing the main intellectual property protection mechanisms. Furthermore, most respondents have limited knowledge about protection and technology transfer mechanisms, indicating the need for greater training and institutional communication. It is concluded that although UNIFAL-MG has an established structure and policies aimed at innovation, the culture of knowledge protection and valorization remains incipient. Strengthening the integration between universities, businesses, and government, as proposed by the triple helix model, is essential to consolidate a more innovative and sustainable academic environment.

izabella Carneiro Bastos, Universidade Federal de Alfenas

Ph.D. from Montanuniversität Leoben – Austria (2014), with national recognition by Unicamp; experience at OMV Aktiengesellschaft, and Associate Professor in the Department of Oil Production and Processing at the University of Leoben – Austria (2010–2014). Master’s in Automation and Industrial Electrical Systems from the Federal University of Itajubá (2010), with experience at Technische Universität Dresden – Germany (2010); Electrical Engineer graduated from the National Institute of Telecommunications (2008); Electro-electronics Technician graduated from Escola Técnica de Eletrônica Francisco Moreira da Costa (2002).

Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Science and Technology of the Federal University of Alfenas, where she also leads the research group GEPEEP – Strategic Group in Energy, Oil, and Natural Gas Engineering. She is the founder and coordinator of LAPEE – Applied Laboratory for Energy Efficiency Research.

In administrative roles, since 2018, she has been the Director of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Agency at UNIFAL-MG and Director of the Technology-Based Business Incubator at UNIFAL-MG – NidusTec. Under her leadership, the technology-based business incubator at UNIFAL-MG has become a national reference, standing out for creating new businesses, generating jobs, and social impact. A milestone achievement was the university’s advancement in the national ranking of entrepreneurial universities, jumping 66 positions to reach 21st place, as well as receiving two national highlights in financial capital and extension. In 2024, under her leadership, the incubator also won a podium position in the National Innovative Entrepreneurship Award, receiving the bronze trophy Adelino Medeiros.

She serves as a reviewer for several qualified journals, and her research interests include Industrial Instrumentation, Energy Efficiency, Optimization of Energy Systems, Design and Testing, Electric Mobility, Development of Electronic Circuits, Artificial Lift Processes, Industrial Automation, Intellectual Property, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship.

Luís Otávio Andrade Marques, Universidade Federal de Alfenas/UNIFAL-MG

Bachelor of Science and Economics from the Federal University of Alfenas (UNIFAL-MG), and Technician in Administration from the Federal Institute of Southern Minas Gerais (IFSULDEMINAS). Currently pursuing a degree in Economics with an emphasis on Management and Controllership at UNIFAL-MG. He is currently a recipient of a Development, Science, Technology and Innovation Scholarship (BDCTI – VI) from FAPEMIG and is a member of the University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at UNIFAL-MG.

Renata Aparecida de Oliveira, Universidade Federal de Alfenas/UNIFAL-MG

Bachelor in Business Administration from the Centro Universitário do Sul de Minas – UNIS (2015) and a degree in Biological Sciences from the Universidade de Uberaba – UNIUBE (2009). Specialist in Project Management from PUC-MINAS (2016) and in Instructional Design for Virtual Distance Learning from the Universidade Federal de Itajubá – UNIFEI (2012). She was a basic education teacher at the State Department of Education (MG) and a tutor at the Universidade Federal de Alfenas – UNIFAL. Currently, she is a Development, Science, Technology, and Innovation Fellow (BDCTI – III) at Fapemig and is part of the team at the University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center of UNIFAL/MG.

Leonardo Leonardo Contreras Pereira, Universidade Federal de Alfenas/UNIFAL-MG

Bachelor of Law from PUC Minas – Poços de Caldas (2016–2020), with a specialization in Intellectual Property. Holds two postgraduate degrees from UNIBF: Consumer Law (2021–2023) and Environmental Law (2021–2022). Currently, she is a Development, Science, Technology, and Innovation Fellow (BDCTI – III) at Fapemig and is part of the team at the University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center of UNIFAL/MG.
