Abstract

This work demonstrates the evolution of the precepts of sustainable development with a focus on the peculiarities of Brazil and Mexico. It points out the difficulties for the full adoption of a decentralized and participatory environmental management model, highlighting, however, that in both countries the advances in sustainable development are a consequence and legacy of international discussions on the theme, which led to the need to create, in both, a more suitable environment for environmental management and the establishment of more appropriate institutional arrangements and laws.
