Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present views on economic development, starting from a literature review, focusing beyond the quantitative and qualitative debate. To meet this goal, the paper presents the general concepts and analysis on the evolution of the theory of economic development, focusing on the ideological views. Another issue concerns the duality, starting basic concept (on the opposition of a capitalist sector and other pre-capitalist) and external and internal constraints. In conclusion, as discussed in this work, it is observed that the discussion of development theory is older than his mathematical sophistication in the 1930s and 50s. Already, in relation to international trade and disproportionate gains between developed and developing (partly explained by unequal exchanges and dualism itself) what remains is the need for new strategies. Where South-South alliances emerge as a counterpoint or alternative vision to strategic military East-West structure.
